I never really expected my dream to come true.

Yet, there I was, standing on a ladder, organizing and cleaning shelves in my very own bookstore—well, mine, Aubrey’s and our not-so-silent partner, her husband, Josh.

I’d dusted as high as I could reach, until I was forced to stand on a step-ladder to get to the very top shelf.

As I reached for a box of books, sparkling dust motes drifted slowly down from the shelf and I felt a tickling sensation in my nose. Uh-oh. With one hand, I grabbed the dust rag I’d left on the shelf, and held it up to my face.

Ah-choo. Ah-choo. Ah-choo!

I sneezed with such violence, the overloaded box slipped from my grasp and fell to the floor. The cardboard ripped apart and dozens of paperback books scattered across the carpet.

Startled, I pulled back abruptly from my precarious perch on the very top of the rickety wooden ladder. As I grabbed at air, the dust wand flew from my fingers and I found myself falling with the ladder. But before I could hit the floor, strong arms caught me. In a daze, I stared at the ladder, before I turned my head and gazed into the hazel-colored eyes of the tall, dark-haired man who held me.

Excerpt from My Christmas Dream

Aubrey popped into the bookstore while I was hanging wreaths in the windows. 

“What do you think?” I asked her. 

“I have some ideas,” she answered and shortly after that, headed back out the door to do some shopping.

I rarely went out at lunchtime, but I needed to get some things for Thanksgiving dinner. “You’re in charge,” I told Sylvester, who looked up at me from his bed of books, yawned and went back to sleep.

By the time I got back to the bookstore, I was tired and frustrated and it wasn’t until I walked inside and turned around to flip the Closed sign to Open that I realized the windows had been decorated in my absence.

Aubrey had flocked the windows with a spray can of “snow.” And then each window had a display with a stuffed animal, “reading” a book. Looking around the rest of the room, I saw that on top of the Children’s Corner bookcase, the bear with glasses had been joined by a mama bear and three little bears while “papa” bear read The Night Before Christmas to them.

There was even a display made of red and green books stacked so each level had less books and the top level was only one book, a book Christmas tree.

The decorations were awesome.  I had to tell her.

Happy Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July to all my American readers!

The fireworks have already started around here.

My husband just finished making his delicious potato salad--of course I had to do a taste test. We got the watermelon yesterday, baked beans ready to cook and cornbread ready to make. Yum! 

Meanwhile, if I wasn't so busy writing my 2020 Christmas story, I'd be reading. Hell. I was in Hell. At least, that was what I imagined Hell would be like, minus all the traffic, horns honking, and buildings. I brushed a flyaway strand of hair out of my eyes and wiped my damp forehead with my wrist. I’d had my fair share of awful jobs in the past, but this one, I truly believed, was the worst.


The beeping and grinding from all the machinery was driving me crazy, the heat from the sun reflecting off the asphalt was causing perspiration to trickle down from under my hard hat into my face. That’s until an early afternoon downpour rolled in and soaked me to the skin. The flimsy, reflective vest I wore was plastered to my T-shirt. Everyone was impatient to get to where they were going, and I was one of the unfortunate people stopping them with my silly sign.


And then there was the guy maneuvering the huge excavator who I imagined to be Satan himself. When the guy drove through the first time, his eyes bugged out of his head when he spotted me, and then he whistled and winked. I guess he thought I would be flattered by his obnoxious behavior. After the twentieth time, I flipped him the bird. The look on his face was priceless, shock, and then he laughed.


He yelled, “I love a gal with spunk.”
